Shimla, Aug 14,
A video circulating from an Anganwadi centre in Bhatawali village of Poanta division in Sirmaur district has raised concerns about the distribution of free ration supplies under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). The video highlights allegations that the gram and other pulses provided are infested with insects.
Deputy Commissioner of Sirmaur, Anil Khimta, has stated that appropriate action will be taken if the distributed samples are confirmed to be contaminated as alleged in the video.
The video features two women protesting at the Anganwadi centre, expressing their dissatisfaction with the distribution of pulses they claim are infested with insects. They argue that the gram provided is unfit for consumption. In response, an Anganwadi worker defended the quality of the pulses, pointing out that there had been no prior complaints about the quality of ration distributed under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
The Anganwadi worker also mentioned that she would no longer distribute ICDS rations to the complaining woman, as her children have reached six years of age.
When HimachalScape called the affected Kiran a resident of the village, she confirmed the content of the video.
It is important to note that, as per a Supreme Court of India order, free rations are provided to pregnant and lactating mothers, as well as children under five years old, to ensure proper prenatal and postnatal care and nutrition across India. The ICDS program, which operates through Anganwadi centres and the Midday Meal Scheme, is universal and intended for women of all economic backgrounds.
