Shimla, Dec 24,
The recent snowfall across Himachal Pradesh has significantly brought down maximum temperatures, creating chilly conditions in the region. Most stations reported maximum temperatures 5-7°C below normal, with some locations showing a departure of 2-3°C below normal. The sharp dip in temperatures is attributed to fresh snowfall in higher altitudes and cloudy weather across many parts of the state.
The heaviest snowfall was recorded in Khadrala (24 cm), followed by Sangla (16.5 cm), Chopal and Jubbal (15 cm each), Kalpa 13.7cm, Pooh 6 cm and Shimla (7 cm). These snow-covered regions experienced a marked fall in day temperatures, intensifying the cold conditions. The state capital, Shimla, recorded a maximum temperature of just 1.8°C, 2.7°C below normal.
Rainfall added to the wintry feel in lower and mid-hills, with notable amounts observed in Karsog (9.2 mm), Kasauli (7 mm), and Nahan (4.7 mm). Dense fog further reduced visibility in Bilaspur (100 meters) and moderate fog affected areas like Sundernagar and Mandi, where visibility was limited to 400-600 meters.
Forecasts suggest severe cold wave conditions will prevail in the low hills and plains over the next few days, with dense fog likely to persist around Bhakra Dam (Bilaspur) and Balh Valley (Mandi) during early mornings and late nights.
In the coming days an active western disturbance expected from 27th December may bring fresh snowfall and rain, potentially adding to the cold conditions. Residents are advised to dress warmly and take precautions against fog and frost in vulnerable areas.
