Shimla, Dec 21,
Snowfall is likely to grace Himachal Pradesh before New Year, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the impact of an intense Western Disturbance over Northwest India starting the night of December 26, 2024.
This weather system will induce cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and its neighbouring areas by December 27, interacting with easterly winds at lower levels,” stated a weather report by IMD. Adding that, this interaction will bring significant moisture from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, leading to widespread precipitation until December 28.
Fairly widespread to widespread snowfall and rainfall are expected over the Western Himalayan region, including Himachal Pradesh, during December 26–28, with peak activity forecasted on December 27 and 28, it informed. Light to moderate snowfall is likely in many areas of the state, particularly in the higher reaches.
Meanwhile, the plains of northwest and adjoining central India may also witness scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds could affect parts of East Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh on December 27 and 28.
In Himachal Pradesh, temperatures are expected to remain steady for the next two days, with a likely drop of 2–3°C in some areas between December 27 and 29. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are anticipated in the lower hills and plains, with frost occurring in certain regions during early mornings. Additionally, dense fog is expected in areas around Bhakra Dam (Bilaspur) and parts of Balh Valley (Mandi) on December 24 and 25 during late-night and early morning hours.
The IMD has urged residents and travelers to prepare for cold weather and take necessary precautions in areas prone to snow and frost. The forecasted snowfall is expected to enhance the winter charm of Himachal Pradesh, offering a perfect festive backdrop as the year comes to a close.
