The quality of healthcare services in Himachal Pradesh has once again come under scrutiny after the death of a woman following a stone removal surgery at Civil Hospital Arki in Solan district triggered allegations of medical negligence and a political controversy.
According to reports, 44-year-old Seema, wife of Hansraj Gautam and a resident of Chunadi village in Arki, was admitted to the hospital for kidney stone surgery last Wednesday.
Family members alleged that her condition deteriorated after the operation and that she suffered continuous excessive bleeding following the procedure.
As her health worsened, doctors referred her to the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla. The family claimed they reached Shimla within 45 minutes, but doctors at IGMC allegedly informed them that Seema had died nearly two hours earlier.
The incident sparked outrage among relatives and local residents, who staged a protest and created a ruckus at Civil Hospital Arki on Thursday morning. The agitated family members accused the hospital administration and doctors of negligence and demanded a fair and impartial inquiry along with strict action against those responsible.

Replying to media queries in Shimla, Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil said that the government would conduct a probe into the death. However, the matter took a controversial turn after a video surfaced on social media in which the Minister was allegedly heard making an insensitive remark after the media interaction ended. The viral clip has drawn criticism from opposition leaders and social media users.
Meanwhile, Block Medical Officer Dr. Mukul Rastogi stated that a committee has been constituted to investigate the incident and further action would be taken as per the findings of the inquiry report.
