Shimla, July 22,
Kamlesh Thakur, the wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the newly elected MLA from Dehra, was the first to take the oath. Following her were Ashish Sharma, re-elected from Hamirpur, and Baba Hardeep Singh from Nalagarh.
This event marks a significant moment in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, as it is the first time a husband and wife—Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Kamlesh Thakur—will serve together. This follows the precedent set by Virbhadra Singh and his son Vikramaditya Singh, who served together as father and son.
The assembly had previously reduced its number of MLAs to 59 due to the resignation of three independent MLAs and the disqualification of six Congress MLAs after the Rajya Sabha elections. The by-election results announced on June 4 led to the election of six new MLAs. Today’s oath-taking ceremony marks the official beginning of their term, bringing the total number of MLAs back to 68.
