Shimla, June 26
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a significant wet spell in Himachal Pradesh, with conditions becoming favorable for the advance of the Southwest Monsoon over the next 3-4 days. This forecast suggests a marked increase in precipitation activity across the state, starting from 28th June and continuing until 1st July 2024.
Initially, light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected at a few locations within the state over the next 24 hours. The intensity of rainfall is projected to escalate from 28th June onwards, bringing widespread precipitation. Many areas in the low and mid hill districts, including Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur, are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall. Moreover, isolated instances of heavy rainfall are anticipated in these districts between 28th and 30th June, with peak intensity on the 29th and 30th.
This spell of rainfall will likely be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h at isolated locations in the low and mid hill districts from 28th to 30th June. Temperature-wise, the state is expected to experience normal to below-normal minimum and maximum temperatures during this period.
Issuing advisory the IMD stated that residents are advised to prepare for the following impacts, strong winds may damage plantations, horticulture, and standing crops, Vulnerable structures could suffer partial damage, Major city traffic might be disrupted due to waterlogging, leading to longer travel times, Minor damage to kutcha houses, walls, and huts could be expected, Loose objects may become airborne, Localized flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and closure of underpasses could be possible.
Suggesting actions in this weather they added that Stay indoors and secure windows and doors, Avoid travel if possible and seek shelter in safe places, avoiding trees.Stay out of water bodies and away from objects that conduct electricity, Avoid open areas during thunderstorms, Adhere to traffic advisories and guidelines from relevant authorities and be cautious of reduced visibility due to low clouds and fog.
