Year-on-year inflation in March 23 at 5.79%, food inflation 5.02%

The All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial workers increased by 0.6 points to 133.3 in March 2023, representing a 0.45% month-on-month rise, compared to a 0.80% increase during the same period last year. Fuel and light accounted for the largest upward pressure, contributing 0.25 percentage points to the overall change. Various items such as Cooking Gas or LPG, Firewood and Chips, Hospital Nursing Home Charges, Medicine Allopathic, Motor Cycle/Scooter Mopad, Toilet Soap, Tooth Paste, Arhar Dal, Cow Milk, Dairy Milk, Fish Fresh, Pure Ghee, Apple, Banana, Cauliflower, Brinjal, Cabbage, Bitter Guard, French Bean, Lemon, Peas, Cumin Seed, and Cooked Meal caused the rise in index. However, the increase was offset by Wheat Atta, Rice, Potato, Onion, Drum Stick, Lady Finger, Tomato, Grapes, Soyabean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Mustard Oil, Cotton Seed Oil, Poultry Chicken, Egg-Hen, etc., putting downward pressure on the index.
The highest increase was observed in Ahmedabad, which recorded a rise of 3.3 points, followed by Jamshedpur and Gurugram with 3.2 and 3.1 points, respectively. Three centres recorded an increase of 2 to 2.9 points, 23 centres showed an increase of 1 to 1.9 points, and 43 centres saw an increase of 0.1 to 0.9 points. On the other hand, Salem recorded the highest decrease of 1.4 points, followed by Tirunelveli and Tripura with 1.1 and 1 point, respectively. Nine centres recorded a decrease of 0.1 to 0.9 points, while the index of four centres remained stationary.

Year-on-year inflation for the month was 5.79%, compared to 6.16% in the previous month and 5.35% during the same month last year. Likewise, food inflation stood at 5.02%, a decrease from the previous month’s 6.13% and the corresponding month a year ago, which was 6.27%.
