Shimla, Dec 20,
Thirty-three individuals were found guilty by the Additional District Court in Shimla on Thursday for their involvement in a 2015 double homicide that occurred in the Chopal area. The incident stemmed from a heated argument during a wedding celebration in the village of Tuil.
The court, presided over by Additional District Judge Praveen Garg, convicted the accused on charges including causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons, arson, and rioting. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Friday, December 20th.
The tragic events unfolded when a dispute arose between Narbir Singh, a local resident, and the family hosting the wedding. Despite attempts at reconciliation, tensions escalated. A stone-pelting incident followed, leading to a confrontation at Narbir Singh’s residence.
In the ensuing chaos, Narbir Singh, while attempting to defend himself, accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in the death of a man named Bantu. This tragic event ignited a violent mob, who then dragged Narbir Singh from his home, subjected him to severe beatings over a distance of 500 meters, and ultimately killed him. The mob further escalated their actions by setting Narbir Singh’s house ablaze.
Following the incident, Narbir Singh’s wife, Virendra Devi, filed a complaint with the Chopal Police Station.
The investigation led to the arrest of over three dozen individuals, facing charges of murder, causing grievous hurt, arson, and rioting.
While the court could not definitively pinpoint the individuals directly responsible for the homicides due to the large number of participants, the convictions were based on evidence of their involvement in the violent mob and the subsequent acts of violence and arson.
