Shimla, Jan 26,
On the occasion of Republic Day, the government has granted remission to 397 convicted prisoners lodged in various jails across the state, offering relief to inmates who have shown consistent good conduct during incarceration.
The remission has been extended under the orders of the state government led by Chief Minister , reaffirming the administration’s commitment to reformative justice and humane correctional practices. Officials said the decision is intended as a constitutional goodwill gesture aligned with the spirit of Republic Day.
As per the official notification, prisoners undergoing life imprisonment or serving sentences exceeding ten years have been granted a remission of 45 days. Those sentenced to more than five years and up to ten years have received a 30-day remission, while inmates serving three to five years have been granted a 21-day reduction.
Prisoners with sentences ranging from one to three years have been allowed 15 days of remission, and those serving between six months and one year have been granted a seven-day concession.
Additional Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Abhishek Trivedi stated that there are currently 1,083 convicted prisoners lodged in state jails, out of which 397 are eligible for remission. He clarified that inmates convicted under the NDPS Act and those involved in other heinous and serious crimes have been excluded from the benefit.
Officials emphasized that the remission is not a blanket pardon but a recognition of discipline, reformation, and positive conduct exhibited by prisoners during their sentence. The move is expected to boost morale among inmates and encourage adherence to correctional norms within prisons.
The Republic Day remission reflects the state government’s traditional approach of combining justice with compassion, underscoring the belief that even those undergoing life imprisonment deserve an opportunity for reform and dignity within the constitutional framework
