Nahan, Sept 2,
A sudden surge in the Giri river late Monday night forced authorities to evacuate more than 50 residents from Bangadan Basti in Sirmaur district, after floodwaters began eating into land dangerously close to the Bangadan bridge.
According to officials, the situation turned critical as continuous rains swelled the river, triggering rapid soil erosion. Acting swiftly, the district administration moved the affected families to safer shelters, arranging food and temporary accommodation for them.
The flooding has also left behind a trail of infrastructural damage. The sumpwell and five submersible pump sets of the Bangdan No.-2 Lift Irrigation Scheme (L.I.S.) were washed away, severely impacting irrigation facilities in the area. With agricultural fields now cut off from their water supply, restoration of the scheme has been marked as a priority task. Losses are being assessed.

Authorities have cautioned residents living along riverbanks and vulnerable slopes to remain alert. “Continuous soil erosion by the Giri river is keeping the situation precarious. People are strongly advised not to take unnecessary risks and to follow the safety advisories in place,” said a district administration spokesperson.
Meanwhile, teams are on the ground working to control damage and initiate repair measures. Rehabilitation support for the displaced families has also been assured.
