Misuse of my DP photo has torn away my entire reputation, claimed Rankaj Verma, a accused in the infamous Chandigarh University MMS leak case. Only if Himachal police would have helped me in time, I could have been saved from becoming an accused in the infamous Chandigarh University infamous MMS matter. This was stated by Rankaj Verma, one of the accused, here today after getting a bail from the court. Denying all allegations, he informed that after remaining behind bars for 20 days, he has now got regular bail. He stated that his social media DP profile was hacked and misused, due to which he has to suffer the consequences of being termed as an accused in this matter. He informed that, all three accused, the girl, another from Rohru as well as the prime accused Sanjeev have testified in the court of law that they do not know him and that I (Rankaj) have nothing to do in this case.
He informed that on September 18, a friend called him up to inform that his photo is going viral on internet, as a prime accused in the CU matter. Immediately after verifying the information, he went to the Dhalli police station to file a complaint. However the SHO not taking him seriously denied filing an FIR. On persuasion, cops advised him to take up the matter with Mohali police. Like a aware citizens awaited, for them (Mohali police) at the station, who then took him for enquiry to their jurisdiction.
Worth a mention here that the same evening a tweet was done by DGP Himachal Pradesh that the state police has nabbed an accused wanted by Punjab police in Chandigarh University alleged video leak case. Tagging PP, CMO of Himachal Pradesh and Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur Sanjay Kundu had said on state police twitter handle that in Chandigarh University case, HP police reacted to request of Punjab Police with sensitivity & professionalism.
Verma further informed that, after enquiry the Mohali police found that he had no involvement in the matter and that his phone was never used for doing the crime. Verma said that he was told by Mohali police that they are satisfied and find no involvement in the matter. Yet to astonishment, they produced me in court, and took me into police remand for 7 days,” added Rankaj.
When I was produced before the accused girl, she denied knowing me in anyways, or about my involvement in the crime, both before the police and in the court,” stated Verma. The prime accused Sanjeev too, denied the allegations on me, he added. Yet had to remain behind bars from 20 days (12 days police and 7 days Judicial custody).
Explaining about the DP hack he stated that the prime accused took his photo randomly through some friend search internet site. This was the photo which he (Prime accused) was using to talk to the girl as well as for blackmailing few others. This has been testified in the court by the prime accused, informed Verma.
On September 18, massive protests broke out in the Chandigarh University campus after students alleged that “private” and “objectionable” videos of several women hostel inmates were leaked on the internet. Reportedly the alleged video was shot by a girl living in the same hostel, where after she sent it to her friend who lives in Shimla, who leaked it on internet. She was arrested, where after the radar of inquiry turned towards Himachal Pradesh, where allegedly the master mind of this entire episode resided. In the matter two people from Himachal Pradesh were arrested, and then later the prime accused was nabbed from North east. He has been identified as Sanjeev, an ex-army man.
The matter triggered limelight as social media posts claimed that several girls attempted to die by suicide after their videos leaked online. This ignited intense pressure, and under police was forced into taking swift action to solve the case.
Raising questions on the working of Himachal Police, legal associate accompanying accused Verma, stated that in future, they would surely look for answers from HP police and government, that how without verifying details and facts they defamed the reputation of his client.
