Shimla, April 5
In the upcoming Municipal Corporation Shimla elections, candidates will be allowed to spend a maximum of one lakh rupees on their campaigns. According to a media communique, the District Election Officer/Deputy Commissioner Shimla, Aditya Negi, announced this provision during a meeting with political party representatives. He also stated that expenditure observers would monitor campaign spending.
Nomination filing dates for candidates are April 13, 17 and 18, with sorting taking place on April 19 and the withdrawal of nominations on April 21, 2023. The election campaign will end on April 30, 2023, with 149 polling stations available for voters to vote.
Negi also provided information about the process of filing nominations. Candidates from Wards 1 to 7 can file their nomination with SDM Shimla (Urban), while candidates from Wards 8 to 14 can file their nomination with SDM Shimla (Rural). Candidates from Wards 15 to 21 can file their nominations with Assistant Commissioner Shimla. Tehsildar Shimla (Urban) will accept nominations for Wards 22 to 28. Tehsildar Shimla (Rural) will accept nominations for Wards 29 to 34.
After the withdrawal of nominations on April 21, 2023, the list of all the contesting candidates will be finalized, along with their election symbols.
Talking about candidature, he stated that the candidate must be over 21 years old and residents of the ward they are contesting.
The DC also reminded candidates that their membership can be cancelled if they spend more than one lakh rupees on their campaigns. He urged political parties to conduct the elections peacefully and follow the election code of conduct guidelines.
