ABVP alleges caste discrimination against Mid-Day meal employee in Shimla school
Shimla, April 27
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a right-wing student organization, has accused a female mid-day meal employee at Chikhar School in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, of facing caste discrimination. Nancy Atal, the State Co-convener of ABVP Himachal Pradesh, issued a press statement condemning the incident and called for immediate action by the administration.
According to the statement, the mid-day meal worker appointed at Chikhar School belongs to a Scheduled Caste. Out of 40 students, only 20 students receive food prepared by her, while the remaining 20 students do not have lunch at school. The school has two mid-day meal workers in Upper Primary, and when meals are prepared by others, all students eat at school.

Atal stated that the segregation of students on the basis of their caste during lunchtime is unacceptable. She emphasized that such discriminatory practices should not be forced upon young children, who should be taught the value of non-discrimination towards caste, sex, creed, and faith. Atal also expressed concern that the incident may affect the mindset of the students.
The ABVP demands that the administration takes strict action against the discrimination faced by the mid-day meal employee. The organization believes that this issue sends the wrong message to tender-aged students studying in the school and that schools should be a place where lessons of unity and non-discrimination are taught.
