Shimla, June 5
As the summer season progresses, the weather in Shimla is shifting from scorching to sweltering, with upcoming rain showers expected to heighten the hot and humid conditions in the state. Temperatures have reached 46.3 degrees, but with the summer season nearing its end, the maximum temperature is gradually decreasing.
In Una, the temperature soared to 41.6 degrees, which felt closer to 45 degrees due to it being three degrees above normal. Tourist destinations experienced light rain recently, providing a pleasant respite and necessitating full-sleeve garments during the early morning hours. Following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections, there has been a noticeable increase in tourists in Manali, Shimla, and Dalhousie, with visitor numbers expected to rise further.
The state is predicted to experience light to moderate precipitation within the next 24 hours, along with potential thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas of Chamba, Kullu, and Kinnaur. Hail may occur in isolated spots in Kangra, Shimla, and Mandi. Sirmaur, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur might see light precipitation with thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas. Lahaul Spiti is also expected to have light precipitation in some places.
The rising temperatures in higher regions have benefited the cherry crop in Narkanda and Amarinder Singh’s renowned orchard in Taiali. Tourists are enjoying fresh cherries from Matiyana to Kumersen, with orchardists selling one-kilogram boxes of Himachal Red and Red Brown cherries along the roadside at wholesale prices.
According to the Meteorological Department, Tissa in Chamba recorded 16 mm of rain, Kukumsheri 12.8 mm, Kalpa in Kinnaur 4.3 mm, Sangla 2.4 mm, Nichar 2.2 mm, and Gondola 1.8 mm. Meanwhile, Mandi experienced a heatwave. The IMD also forecasts rain in some areas from mid to high reaches, with light snow and traces possible in higher altitudes. Rain or snowfall episodes may continue for the next 24 hours in higher regions, while summer showers are expected in isolated places in the mid and foothills.
Warnings have been issued for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour in isolated locations.
