Shimla, Aug 27
As the ten-day Monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly set to commence on Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has devised a floor strategy to counter the state government on key issues.
The BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) met last night to formulate their approach, focusing particularly on the government’s recent financial decisions and its handling of various controversies.
Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, who is at the forefront of this strategy, criticized the government’s move to deduct five times the amount from policemen’s salaries for their travel in Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses.
He deemed this decision “unfair,” highlighting that policemen often travel for government work and should not have to bear this financial burden from their own pockets.
Thakur called for the immediate withdrawal of this policy, urging the government to directly pay the HRTC contribution instead of complicating the process by deducting it from salaries.
The BJP has also expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of financial management by the state government.
The party plans to aggressively corner the ruling government on this issue during the session, especially in light of recent controversies surrounding an alleged coup attempt and the registration of an FIR against BJP MLA Hansraj.
Adding fuel to the fire, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut recently made headlines with her controversial remarks against protesting farmers and the state government, accusing the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led administration of misappropriating Rs 1,800 crore that was allegedly handed over by the Modi government.
In the backdrop of these developments, the BJP’s decision to skip the all-party meeting convened by Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania has further escalated tensions.
The party cited Thakur’s involvement in the Haryana assembly elections and his ill health as reasons for his absence. However, it is evident that the BJP is not pleased with the Speaker’s remarks during the by-election campaign, and this has contributed to their decision to boycott the meeting.
As the Monsoon session approaches, all eyes are on the BJP’s floor strategy and how the party plans to navigate the challenges posed by the ruling government.
Speaker Pathania has appealed to members of both parties to ensure the smooth conduct of the session, but with tensions running high, a stormy session seems likely.
