The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has written to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressing grave concern over the politicization of the death of Vimal Negi, urging the state government to initiate a judicial inquiry rather than handing over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In a detailed letter issued by Sanjay Chauhan, Secretary of CPI(M) Himachal Pradesh State Committee, the party emphasized that justice for Vimal Negi can only be ensured through a transparent probe conducted under the principles of legal jurisprudence. While acknowledging the family’s demand for a CBI inquiry, the party expressed apprehension over the effectiveness and impartiality of the agency, citing past failures in sensitive cases like Hoshiar Singh and Gudiya.
Chauhan accused successive governments of institutionalizing corruption and highlighted various scams allegedly involving high-ranking officials. He cited the 2022 police recruitment scam, claiming that over 300 candidates in Kangra alone had purchased leaked exam papers for over Rs 2 lakh each. The party alleged that the complainant in the case was arrested to suppress evidence and further questioned the role of the CBI, stating it had failed to recover the massive sum involved.
The letter also mentioned an alleged land grab near the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, involving 35 bighas of land originally belonging to the Himalayan Brahmo Samaj. Chauhan claimed that the former DGP Sanjay Kundu was a party to the dispute and had acted with political backing.
Expressing outrage over recent judicial corruption cases across the country, including allegations against a Delhi High Court judge and a CBI court judge, the CPI(M) questioned the credibility of current anti-corruption mechanisms.
The party announced it is forming a committee to investigate high-profile corruption cases in the state and urged the Chief Minister to launch a campaign against corrupt officers, regardless of their position.
“The fight against corruption needs strong political will and honest administrative resolve,” Chauhan stated, warning that failure to act could erode public trust and compromise justice for the people.
Calling for immediate action in the Vimal Negi case, he demanded that all individuals named by the deceased family in the complaint must be arrested. He asserted that only a judicial oversight can ensure that “the truth is not buried once again.”
