Shimla, Aug 31
In view of continuous heavy rainfall and the forecast of more downpours in the next 24 hours, the Deputy Commissioner of Shimla, Anupam Kashyap (IAS), has ordered the closure of all educational institutions across the district on Monday, September 1.
The directive covers all government and private schools, colleges, Anganwadi centres, ITIs, polytechnics, coaching institutes, and nursing colleges. The decision was taken after persistent rains triggered landslides, falling of trees, and road blockages in several parts of Shimla.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with heavy to very heavy rain at a few locations, and very heavy to extremely heavy rain likely at isolated places over Bilaspur, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan, and Una districts in the next 16–18 hours. Similarly, light to moderate rain is very likely at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, and Mandi during the same period.
The order, issued under provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, aims to ensure the safety of students. Heads of all institutions and concerned departments have been instructed to strictly comply with the directive.
