Chamba/Shimla, Nov 13,
Chamba town witnessed hours of tension on Wednesday evening after an assault on three local youths triggered public protests and a confrontation outside the city police station.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the Surada area, where a group of around 20–25 unidentified individuals on motorcycles allegedly attacked three boys who were on their way to a temple. According to initial statements from witnesses, the group reportedly brandished sharp-edged objects and fled the spot before more people arrived. Two of the boys sustained injuries, and one was referred to Chamba Medical College in critical condition.
As information circulated rapidly—primarily through social media—residents began assembling outside the Chamba police station by around 8 p.m., expressing anger over what they perceived as a serious lapse in local security. Within a short span, the gathering swelled into a sizable demonstration, with people demanding swift arrests and a clear explanation from authorities.
The situation escalated when a section of the crowd attempted to force entry into the police station, allegedly to confront the accused who had been detained. A brief scuffle took place between police personnel and protestors before reinforcements were deployed.
Senior officers, including SP Vijay Saklani and ASP Hitesh Lakhanpal, reached the site and held discussions with community representatives. After sustained persuasion, the crowd dispersed, restoring calm to the area.
Police later confirmed the arrest of one accused and said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend others involved. More than 25 individuals are under verification based on video footage and eyewitness accounts.
Authorities have described the incident as “serious” and have increased surveillance across sensitive points in the district. An appeal has been issued to residents to maintain peace and avoid sharing unverified information that could fuel further tension.
The administration has assured strict action in accordance with law and stated that additional security measures are being implemented to prevent any escalation while the investigation progresses.
