Dharamshala, Nov 27
In a moment that blended Himachali warmth with global harmony, international mountaineer Anjali Sharma of Gamru village, Kangra, entered a new chapter of life as she tied the knot with Rwanda-born civil engineer Yves Kaziuka. The ceremony, held at the Army Rest House in Dharamshala, has drawn admiration from across the region, not just for its emotional depth but for its graceful fusion of cultures.
Sharma, celebrated for conquering some of the toughest peaks in the world, found her newest ascent far from snowfields and summits. The couple’s story began in Moscow in 2023, where a chance meeting between two travellers gradually strengthened into a bond defined by trust, shared discipline, and the spirit of adventure.
Yves, currently working in the United States, embraced the rituals of a traditional Indian wedding with heartfelt sincerity. Anjali, who has climbed through personal and professional trials with resilience, stepped into the moment with characteristic composure. Raised by her mother Pushpa Sharma after losing her father in 2009, she has long been an emblem of courage for her village and for young mountaineers in Himachal. Her sister Monica, a practising lawyer, stood beside her as the couple exchanged vows steeped in local customs.
A record-setting mountaineer, Anjali’s achievements are already inked in global climbing chronicles. She holds two world records for successful ascents of Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and Mount Elbrus (Russia)—both undertaken in traditional Indian attire, including a Gaddi dress and a sari, that captured the imagination of viewers worldwide. She has also scaled formidable routes closer to home, including Diyo Tibba, Hanuman Tibba, and several high ridges of the Dhauladhar range, testifying to her enduring grit.
Today, as Anjali and Yves begin life as partners, they say the mountains will continue to be their compass. Their shared dream, they believe, is to chart new heights together—carrying the spirit of Himachal Pradesh and Rwanda to summits across the world.
A short wedding video, now circulating widely on social media, has further amplified the story’s reach. For many, the union stands as a gentle reminder: that love, like mountaineering, demands courage, trust, and the willingness to cross boundaries—be they ridgelines or continents.
