Shimla, Dec 22,
A major controversy erupted at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Shimla on Monday after a patient alleged that he was physically assaulted by a doctor inside the hospital premises. The incident led to chaos and a crowd of agitated people gathering at the facility, demanding immediate action against the accused.
The patient, Arjun Panwar, had reportedly come to IGMC for an endoscopy procedure. After the procedure, he began experiencing breathing difficulties and proceeded to lie down on a vacant bed in another ward. It was at this point, as per the allegations, that a doctor confronted him, objected to him occupying the bed, and began misbehaving. The verbal exchange allegedly escalated into a physical assault.
Attendants of the patient claimed that the doctor not only used abusive language but also resorted to manhandling the patient. Eyewitnesses reported that the altercation caused panic within the ward and soon drew the attention of other patients and their attendants, many of whom began protesting inside the hospital. The demand for strict action, including the immediate suspension of the accused doctor, grew louder as more people gathered.
Following the uproar, the hospital administration confirmed that the matter is under serious examination. Medical Superintendent Dr Rahul Rao informed that an inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident. “We have taken note of the incident and a detailed report has been sought. Honourable Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has also asked for a report in the matter. We expect it to be submitted by today evening,” Dr Rao said, assuring strict action based on the findings.
The incident has raised concerns about patient safety and accountability in public health institutions, with calls growing for better grievance redressal mechanisms and professional conduct protocols in high-pressure medical environments.
