Himachal Gulf Workers Crisis: Govt on alert as 45,000 workers face uncertainty in conflict zone
Shimla, March 2,
Escalating war-like tensions in parts of the Gulf region have triggered widespread concern in Himachal Pradesh, where nearly 45,000 residents working across West Asia now face an uncertain situation. With developments unfolding rapidly, anxiety has gripped families across the state, many of whom are dependent on relatives employed in countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain.
The Himachal Pradesh government has moved into alert mode, directing the Labour and Employment Department to stay in close contact with workers and their families. Labour and Employment Minister Harsh Vardhan Singh Chauhan said the situation is being closely monitored and assured that any request for evacuation would be taken up with the Union government to ensure the safe return of Himachali workers if required.
What has added to the concern is the emerging disruption in international air travel. With several flights in the region reportedly being suspended due to security concerns, there is a growing likelihood that thousands of passengers could be stranded at various international airports across the Gulf and transit hubs. The exact number of affected individuals is not yet known, but officials acknowledge that travel uncertainty could complicate evacuation efforts if tensions escalate further.

Back home, the impact is already visible. Families in districts such as Sirmaur, Hamirpur and Kangra are anxiously awaiting updates, relying largely on phone calls and social media messages for information. A worker from Sirmaur currently based in Bahrain shared that missile activity was reported near a US military installation close to his workplace, though he described the immediate surroundings as stable but tense. In Hamirpur, a family said their relatives in Doha have been advised to remain indoors as a precautionary measure. In Kangra, concerns have been heightened by reports circulating on television about security threats near major landmarks in Dubai, even as relatives there have conveyed that conditions remain under control.
Despite these reassurances, uncertainty around travel and safety continues to weigh heavily on families, especially in the absence of clear information on the scale of disruptions. Social organisations and family members have urged the government to maintain coordination with central authorities to ensure preparedness for any evacuation scenario, particularly in view of the evolving aviation situation. The ripple effects are also being felt locally, with some foreign nationals visiting Himachal Pradesh reportedly facing difficulty in planning their return journeys due to uncertainties in international flight operations from Delhi. However, officials at Kangra Airport have clarified that regular operations continue as of now and no specific advisory has been issued. Himachal Gulf workers crisis
As tensions persist, the focus remains on monitoring developments closely, ensuring communication with affected families, and preparing for contingencies in a fast-changing geopolitical environment.
