Shimla, April 27
A woman was killed after a man allegedly opened fire in celebratory fervour during a religious ceremony in the Chirgaon area of Shimla district, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred in Kulgaon village, where a consecration ceremony for a newly constructed temple was underway. Amid traditional festivities, music and dancing, the accused reportedly fired a shot while celebrating, which fatally struck a woman identified as Ritika, a resident of Andhra village in the same tehsil. Panic spread among devotees as the accused fled the scene immediately after the firing.
Police from Chirgaon station reached the spot promptly upon receiving information, secured the area, and initiated a preliminary investigation, including collection of forensic evidence and recording of eyewitness accounts.
A case (FIR No. 36/2026) has been registered under Section 103(1) and Section 25 of the Indian Arms Act, 1959. The accused has since been taken into custody and the weapon used in the incident has been recovered.

Superintendent of Police Shimla, Gaurav Singh, said the incident is being investigated from all angles. “Initial findings suggest the firing occurred during celebratory activity. However, all aspects, including intent, handling of the weapon, and accountability, are under detailed examination. Strict legal action will follow based on evidence,” he stated.
Police officials confirmed that statements of witnesses are being recorded and ballistic examination of the weapon will be conducted as part of the probe.
Authorities have reiterated caution against celebratory firing, especially in crowded public gatherings, warning that such acts pose grave risks to life and safety.
