In a tragic incident, the body of a 10-year-old girl was recovered from the Yamuna Ghat in Paonta Sahib area of Sirmaur district late Wednesday evening, police said.
According to preliminary information, the girl was living with her migrant labourer parents in a rented accommodation near Jaljeera Gurudwara on Kripal Shila Gurudwara Road in Paonta Sahib.
Police said the incident came to light when the family returned home after going to the market to purchase items for the birthday celebration of the girl’s brother and found the child missing.
Family members reportedly found the room in a disturbed condition and immediately launched a search in the nearby locality. When the girl could not be traced, a missing complaint was lodged with the police.

Later in the evening, the family received information that the body of a girl had been spotted in the Yamuna River near the ghat area. The family rushed to the spot and identified the body as that of the missing child.
A police team led by Paonta Sahib Police Station SHO Kulwant Singh and DSP Manvendra Thakur reached the scene and initiated investigation proceedings.
The body was taken into custody and shifted first to Civil Hospital, Paonta Sahib, before being sent to Dr YS Parmar Medical College, Nahan for postmortem examination.
Police officials said the exact cause of death would be known only after the postmortem report is received. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and questioning local residents to ascertain the sequence of events and circumstances under which the girl reached the river.
Police said all angles are being investigated and further action would be taken on the basis of the medical and technical evidence.
