Chamba/Shimla, August 8
Seven people were killed and 11 others injured when a private passenger bus met with a serious accident near Chalunj Mor on the Teesa-Bairagarh road in Chamba district on Saturday morning.
The bus was travelling from Bairagarh towards Chamba when it crashed near Chalunj Mor. The vehicle was completely wrecked in the accident, triggering panic in the area and prompting local residents and rescue teams to rush to the spot.
Six of the injured passengers were referred to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College and Hospital at Chamba for further treatment. The remaining injured are undergoing treatment at a local health facility.
Superintendent of Police, Chamba, Vijay Saklani confirmed the accident and said a police team had been sent to the spot. He said the exact cause of the accident was not yet clear and would be established after investigation. Initial reports suggested that steering failure might have caused the accident, but this has not been officially confirmed.
The accident has once again brought into focus the vulnerability of passengers travelling on Himachal Pradesh’s mountainous roads, particularly during the monsoon. Landslides, falling boulders, road collapses, slippery surfaces and steep ravines pose recurring risks to commuters across the state. Road accidents and weather-related incidents claim lives every year, raising concerns over road engineering, maintenance, vehicle fitness and safety measures on vulnerable stretches.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed grief over the loss of seven lives and directed the Chamba district administration to provide all possible assistance to the next of kin of the deceased. He also instructed the authorities to ensure immediate and the best possible medical treatment for the injured and wished them a speedy recovery.

Sukhu said the state government stood firmly with the affected families in their difficult hour. He prayed for eternal peace for the departed souls and strength to the bereaved families to bear the irreparable loss.
Former MP and former Himachal Pradesh Congress president Pratibha Singh also expressed deep sorrow over the accident and conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families. She prayed for peace to the departed souls and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
