Reportedly, the name of Abhishek Manu Singhvi has been finalised by the Congress party to be the candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh. The polls are scheduled to be held on February 27 this month. Reports Singhvi may file his nomination tomorrow.
As per an AICC release. names of four candidates, Sonia Gandhi from Rajasthan, Akhilesh Prasad Singh from Bihar, Abhishek Manu Singhvi from Himachal Pradesh and Chandrakant Handore from Maharashtra have been finalised for Congress candidates for Biennial elections to Rajya Sabha.
Noteworthy that elections to 56 Rajya Sabha seats are scheduled across 15 states, of which Himachal Pradesh is one. The hill State will elect one Rajya Sabha member as the tenure of BJP president J.P. Nadda is ending this April.
In Himachal Pradesh likelihood is that an INC member will make it to the Upper house. In the hill state out of the 68-member assembly the INC has 40 MLAs. On the other hand, opposition BJP has 26 MLAs in the house.
So far opposition BJP has not announced any candidate. Likelihood the Saffron party may not field any candidate from the same and the election may not be required. The last date of Filing nomination is February 15.
Reportedly, a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party was held last evening, and a single line proposal was put forward that the high command will decide the candidate for the Rajya Sabha MP.
Reports suggest that names of former Union Minister Anand Sharma, former Rajya Sabha MP Viplav Thakur, former Congress State President Kaul Singh Thakur, former Minister Asha Kumari, who belong to Himachal, were also being considered for Rajya Sabha MP. Speculations were also that Priyanka Gandha Vadra maybe named the RS candidate for Himachal.
