Shimla, July 8,
The alleged hacking of Himachal Pradesh University’s (HPU) official website has sparked strong reactions across the student community, with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) leading a protest on campus, accusing the administration of gross negligence and demanding immediate accountability. According to the SFI, suspicious activity was first noticed on July 2, when students attempting to access important sections of the HPU website encountered unusual disruptions. It was later confirmed that several key sections had become inaccessible, prompting concerns that the site may have been compromised by unidentified hackers.
Speaking during the demonstration, SFI campus Vice president Aman alleged that the administration failed to take timely action or even acknowledge the breach, leaving students in the dark. He said that critical services, including examination details, academic records, and the ongoing admission process, were affected, directly impacting thousands of students. He further pointed out that the administration neither issued a clarification nor initiated any transparent investigation into the extent of the breach, raising doubts about the safety of student data.
The protest also brought attention to the university’s ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system, which was implemented in 2014 to streamline student services. Ironically, SFI leaders said, the same system is now contributing to widespread inconvenience. Students reportedly had to travel to the university physically to resolve digital issues, defeating the very purpose of online facilitation. Protesters claimed that repeated technical glitches and now a possible hacking incident have exposed how ill-prepared the administration is to handle digital infrastructure, especially cybersecurity.
Terming the event as a direct threat to students’ academic future and personal data, the SFI demanded that the ERP system be withdrawn and replaced with a more secure and accountable mechanism. They warned that if the administration fails to take meaningful action soon, the organization will mobilize the larger student community for a sustained movement, and the responsibility for any such escalation would lie with the university authorities.
