Apple Growers demand action against jobbers
Shimla, Aug 3
Apple growers in Himachal Pradesh are urging authorities to take action against certain intermediaries who are bypassing the auction process and facilitating the shipment of apples from the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) yards. The Himachal Pradesh Apple Growers Association expressed concern that these intermediaries are undermining the government’s decision to sell apples based on weight.
Sohan Singh Thakur, the President of the HP Seb Utpadak Sangh (Apple Producers Association), released a press statement calling for measures to address this issue. Thakur alleged that a few traders within Himachal Pradesh’s marketplaces are encouraging the shipment of apples to destinations outside the state, potentially leading to a reversal of the policy of selling apples based on weight.
The association specifically called for punitive actions against the intermediaries responsible for this behavior, with a focus on revoking the license of the head of the Bhattakufar fruit market. Thakur cited an incident from the previous day when traders at the Parala Mandi reportedly violated government orders by deducting two kilograms of apples from each box. This led to a dispute in the marketplace, although shipments eventually resumed.

Thakur emphasized the need for legal consequences for those who defy the regulations concerning trading and shipments. He mentioned that the Marketing Board had already instructed all Agricultural Produce Marketing Committees (APMCs) to ensure that apples are sold based on their weight per kilogram, and that no deductions should be made by agents. Despite these directives, certain intermediaries continue to deduct two kilograms per box, causing financial losses to apple growers. These deductions can range from 50 to 300 rupees per box.
Given these circumstances, the Apple Growers Association is demanding strict enforcement of regulations against the intermediaries and traders who are encouraging shipments that contravene the APMC act. The association seeks to protect the interests of apple growers and ensure fair trade practices within the state’s apple industry.
