Shimla, Nov 12,
The Indian Army is planning to set up wind turbine projects at 20 locations in Himachal Pradesh’s border areas, with a detailed project report already prepared. Each unit is expected to generate between 68,000 and 80,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, sufficient to power around 120 to 160 households in remote regions.
The initiative was discussed during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu with senior officers of the Indian Army’s Central Command in Shimla on Tuesday. The Chief Minister reviewed various projects being implemented by the Army in the state and assured full cooperation from the government for their timely execution.
Appreciating the Army’s move toward renewable energy, Sukhu said such projects would enhance self-sufficiency in the border belt and complement the state’s efforts toward sustainable and green energy development.
Border tourism initiative showing results
During the meeting, the Chief Minister expressed satisfaction over the progress of the border tourism initiative, launched jointly by the state government and the Army. Tourist inflow in these regions has risen from about 21,000 in 2024 to over 70,000 in 2025, reflecting a three-and-a-half-fold increase.
Sukhu directed officials to ensure smooth facilities and improved amenities for tourists visiting the border areas to further enhance their experience.
Efforts to resume border trade
The Chief Minister informed that the state has written to the Union Government seeking the resumption of trade through Shipki La, adding that the response so far has been encouraging. “Due to the consistent efforts of the state government, both India and China have agreed to reopen border trade through Lipulekh Pass, Shipki-La Pass, and Nathu-La Pass,” he said.
Rangrik airport project reviewed
Sukhu also reviewed the progress of the proposed airport at Rangrik in the Spiti region and urged the Army to expedite work on it. He said the airport would provide a major boost to tourism and connectivity in the high-altitude region.
The meeting was attended by Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta, Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister Ram Subhag Singh, and other senior officers.
