Shimla, Aug 6,
The BJP has sharply criticized the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government for filing FIRs against disaster-hit citizens, calling the move insensitive and authoritarian. At a large protest in Mandi, senior BJP leaders including state in-charge Srikant Sharma, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, and state president Dr. Rajeev Bindal warned the government of intensified agitation if the FIRs are not withdrawn immediately.
Srikant Sharma said arrogance and dictatorship are embedded in Congress’s DNA and termed the FIRs “false and shameful.” He accused Congress of insulting National institutions while BJP, he claimed, has always respected the tricolour and the Constitution. Sharma said the Congress government is misusing central relief funds and failing to account for them, while disaster victims are being harassed.
Dr. Bindal alleged that even though the administration had claimed 90% of roads in Shimla were closed, the BJP still held a massive protest. He slammed the FIRs as “deep wounds” inflicted on families already suffering, and accused the government of shutting down institutions and transport services across the state under the guise of governance.
Jairam Thakur said the FIRs include allegations of insulting the National flag and hinted that his name might be added next. He criticized the minimal budget allocation for disaster relief despite damages exceeding Rs 2,000 crore, and alleged that Congress leaders are pressuring officials to clear fake bills for voluntarily donated equipment.
The BJP warned that unless the government cancels the FIRs, protests will intensify at every polling booth in the state.
