Shimla, July 9,
Multiple bomb threat emails received at courts and an educational institution across Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday sparked a high-level security response, although no explosives were ultimately found. According to a spokesperson from the Himachal Pradesh Police, the emails alleged the presence of RDX-based improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at several locations, prompting immediate evacuations and suspension of court proceedings.
The threats were sent to the District and Session Courts in Shimla, Sirmaur, Nahan, Chamba, Kullu, and Kinnaur, as well as to the headmaster of Sanawar School in Solan district. “All affected premises were promptly evacuated and extensive search operations were launched with the help of bomb disposal squads and sniffer dog units,” the police spokesperson said. “No suspicious objects were recovered during the inspections.”
The first email was received at 12:04 a.m. by the Chamba court, with similar messages sent to other locations between 5:00 and 5:40 a.m. The police believe the threats originated from a single source. “The contents of the emails were similar, and preliminary findings suggest a common origin. They were reportedly sent in the name of former students of Anna University,” the spokesperson stated.
This incident is part of a disturbing trend. “Himachal Pradesh has received 8 to 10 such threats in recent months,” the spokesperson revealed, adding that police have already registered cases in Kullu and Shimla and are actively pursuing leads. “An investigation has been initiated to trace the origin of the emails, and we are coordinating with law enforcement agencies in other states.”
In a related development, Kerala Police have arrested a suspect linked to similar threats, and Himachal Pradesh Police are working to secure custody for interrogation. “We are in touch with our counterparts in Kerala to bring the accused here for questioning,” the spokesperson confirmed.
While the threats caused temporary disruption, the police have reiterated their commitment to public safety. “The Himachal Pradesh Police remain alert and fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens,” the spokesperson said, assuring that further updates would follow as the investigation progresses.
