The newly formed CBI team comprises a Deputy Superintendent of Police, an Inspector, and a Sub-Inspector. Tasked with gathering and analyzing critical evidence, the team has already begun recording statements from multiple individuals associated with the case. The officials are also reviewing communication records, official files, and digital data related to Negi’s tenure at HPPCL.
In addition, forensic experts are examining digital devices recovered during the initial stages of the probe to uncover any potential leads.
This development follows a Himachal Pradesh High Court directive dated May 23, which transferred the investigation to the CBI after Negi’s wife, Kiran Negi, filed a petition citing dissatisfaction with the state police’s efforts. The court also mandated that no Himachal cadre officers be included in the CBI probe to ensure an impartial investigation.
Subsequently, on May 26, the CBI registered an FIR against unknown persons under IPC Section 105 (abetment of suicide) and Section 3(5) (complicity involving multiple persons in a crime).
Vimal Negi was reported missing on March 10, and his body was recovered from Gobindsagar Lake in Bilaspur district on March 18, triggering public outcry and calls for a transparent investigation.
The CBI’s ongoing inquiry is expected to bring greater clarity to the circumstances surrounding his death, which has raised several unanswered questions and concerns over possible foul play.
