Chamba Salooni murder case: Video goes viral that police allowed BJP leaders to meet victim’s family
Shimla, June 19
A reportedly circulating video on social media has sparked controversy as it shows the police permitting a BJP leader to meet the family of a victim. The incident follows a week after a protest organized by the BJP in Chamba district regarding the brutal murder of a Dalit youth, allegedly by a person belonging to a minority community.

On June 15, BJP State president Rajiv Bindal led a protest near Salooni, claiming that they were not allowed to meet the victim’s family. Also former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had blamed the Sukhu government for not allowing the leader of the opposition to meet the victim’s family. However the viral video contradicts both these claim.
Here it is pertinent to mention that a day before the protest, BJP youth activists had set fire to the house of the accused. In the video, the Superintendent of police was heard saying that they could go, but perhaps the BJP leaders wanted to bring a large number of people to the victims’ house, which the police did not allow due to the imposition of Section 144 of the CrPC.

Talking about this video, a few Congress supporters stated that since 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has been experiencing a series of losses in various elections, including the Mandi Parliamentary bye-election, three assembly bye-elections, MC elections, and the 2022 Assembly elections. The party is under pressure from the central leadership to make a comeback soon, but despite having emotive issues at hand, the BJP has struggled to garner public support, they added.
The brutal murder of Dalit RTI activist Kedar Jindan, the public lynching of a Dalit activist in Kullu during a religious ceremony, the denial of funeral rites to Dalit individuals in the Kullu district, forcing students from Dalit families to sit in a horse stable during the Prime Minister’s special telecast to school children in the state, and the mysterious killing of Forest Guard Hoshiyar Singh are some of the crimes in which the previous government failed to provide justice without public pressure, they added.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu accused the BJP of playing petty politics in the murder case, emphasizing that the suspect had been arrested by the police. He stated that the police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for this gruesome crime and murder. “However, the act of setting fire to the alleged accused’s home indicates that BJP leaders are engaging in heinous political tactics in response to these shocking crimes,” commented.
