Chaos in Trai Village of Mashobra as irrigation tank unplugs abruptly”
Shimla, Aug 6
Trai village, recently affected by heavy rainfall, is grappling with heightened anxiety over natural disasters. A sudden incident involving the unplugging of an irrigation storage tank’s gatewall, capable of holding 1.5 lakh liters, led to chaos as rushing water sounds startled residents here on Sunday morning.
Dharamsingh and Roshan Lal, heads of local families, recounted the event, describing a massive explosion around 0900hrs during their household chores. The noise attracted villagers, who diverted the water’s flow, potentially averting disaster.
The tank, typically full during the rainy season, lacked a proper gatewall for water control. Instead, a gunny bag was used as makeshift drainage closure. Villagers managed to regain control by placing gunny bag lids with considerable effort.
JE Sunil Bikhta from the Jal Shakti Department acknowledged the need for installing gatewalls, along with plans for roofing and fencing to prevent such incidents in the future.
Locals shared concerns about the tank’s position above four households. A significant volume of water had surged out, taking on flood-like proportions. Villagers warned of potential catastrophe if both four-inch gatewalls had been opened.
Residents suspect that someone intentionally tampered with the sack’s lid, leading to this mishap. They call for serious consideration by the department regarding this matter
