Shimla, Aug 13,
A sudden cloudburst struck the Shrikhand Mahadev region in Kullu district around 5:30 pm on Wednesday, causing the Shrikhand Kurpan Khad to overflow and forcing residents along its banks, including those in Baghipul, to evacuate to safer locations.
Eyewitnesses said the cloudburst split a mountain ravine into two channels—one directing a heavy surge of water, debris, and logs into Baghipul’s Kurpan Khad, and the other into Ganvi Khad. Early warnings from residents of Singhagad and Jaon, relayed via phone calls and social media, enabled downstream communities in Baghipul and Kedas to evacuate before the flood peak. As a result, no casualties or property losses have been reported so far.
Social media updates also indicated that this was not an isolated incident, with reports of additional cloudbursts in the Jalori and Bathar areas of Kullu. All three incidents are believed to have contributed to a sudden rise in water levels in the region’s streams and tributaries.
The official confirmation from the district administration on the number of cloudbursts, rainfall intensity, and damage assessment is awaited. Meanwhile, authorities have advised residents along riverbanks to remain on alert as heavy monsoon rains continue in Himachal Pradesh.
