Shimla, Oct 16,
The pristine Dal Lake in Dharamshala, which has been facing concerns over depletion, is set to receive a much-needed rejuvenation. Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania announced this during a meeting with tourism and forest department officials.
Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the state government plans to consult renowned conservationists and geological experts to conduct a comprehensive study of the lake. The goal is to address the declining water levels and protect the aquatic life that depends on it.
Since 2004, a total of Rs. 31 lakh has been invested in the beautification of Dal Lake by the forest and IPH departments. However, the lake’s catchment area remains a challenge, contributing to water seepage and affecting the local economy.
To mitigate the situation, local activists have taken the initiative to relocate aquatic life to nearby water bodies. Additionally, Kangra Deputy Commissioner is in touch with Anand Malligavad, known as the “Lake Man of India,” to explore long-term solutions.
The government intends to extend similar conservation efforts to Khajjiar Lake in Chamba, a significant tourist attraction with religious significance. A scientific study will be conducted by experts to understand the reasons behind its drying and develop appropriate measures for its revival.
Deputy Chief Whip Pathania stated that a proposal will be presented to the Chief Minister soon, and experts will be invited to conduct the necessary studies. The meeting was attended by key officials from the tourism and forest departments.
