The Government of India has appointed Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, currently serving as a Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, to perform the duties of the office of Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. This appointment, effective from October 19, 2024, follows the retirement of Chief Justice Rajiv Shakdher, who will demit office on October 18, 2024.
The decision was made under the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India. Justice Chauhan, a prominent figure in the Himachal judiciary, will take charge of the duties until a permanent appointment is made.
The notification, issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, was signed by Jagannath Srinivasan, Joint Secretary to the Government of India.
Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan has a distinguished career in the judiciary and is expected to provide strong leadership to the Himachal Pradesh High Court during this transitional period.
Justice Chauhan was born on 9.1.1964 in Tehsil Rohru. He did his schooling from Bishop Cotton School, Shimla and was the School Captain. He graduated with Honours from DAV College, Chandigarh and thereafter obtained degree in Law from Panjab University, Chandigarh. He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Himachal Pradesh in 1989. He started practice in High Court of Himachal Pradesh and practiced in all branches of law.
Prior to elevation, he was Standing Counsel-cum- Legal Advisor to H.P. State Electricity Board Ltd. and earlier to that was Standing Counsel-cum- Legal Advisor to H.P. State Civil Supplies Corporation. He conducted cases of various departments including Boards, Corporations, Financial Institutions, Public and Private Companies, Educational Institutions and Cooperative Societies etc. He had been actively associated with the Legal Aid Programmes.
Elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh and assumed the Office as such on 23.2.2014. Took oath as Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh on 30th November 2014.
During his tenure as a Judge of the High Court, Justice Chauhan has presided over several important cases, including cases related to land acquisition, environment protection, and human rights. He is known for his impartiality and his commitment to upholding the rule of law.
