Scientists of Krishi Vigyan Kendra have issued an important advisory for the paddy farmers of the district in view of the increasing outbreak of black striped dwarf virus in paddy crop. This virus has emerged as a serious threat especially in the lower and mid-hill areas.
This year, the outbreak has been reported from major paddy producing areas including Toka Nangla, Kedarpur, Zamani Wala, Surajpur, Nawada, Mishra Wala, Fatehpur, Kolar, Dhaulakuan and many other places in Paonta Valley of Sirmaur district. This disease stunts plant growth and if not managed properly, can cause heavy crop losses.
The virus is spread by the white planthopper, an insect that can be identified by its transparent forewings, dark veins and a distinctive white stripe on the wing joints. Infected plants show a reduction in height to one-third or half of normal height, and leaves become straight and narrow, roots become stunted and shoots are stunted.
Heavy infestation of the virus can lead to premature plant death, further reducing the yield. Farmers are advised to monitor their fields regularly. They can gently tilt and tap the base of the paddy plants; if larvae or adults are present they can be easily seen floating on the surface of the water.
On detection of the pest, farmers should immediately spray any recommended insecticide as per the guidelines of the Department of Entomology of the Agricultural University. These include Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.5 ml/liter of water, Fipronil 5 SC @ 2 ml/liter, Dinotefuran 20 SG @ 0.4 g/liter, or Flonicamid 50 WG @ 0.3 g/liter. For better coverage, the spray should be applied at the base of the plants using suitable nozzles, such as flat-fan or hollow-cone.
If necessary, spraying can be repeated after 15 days. Farmers are advised to remain alert and take immediate action to control the pest population and prevent further damage to their paddy crops. For technical assistance, farmers can contact Krishi Vigyan Kendra Dhaula Kuan.
