Shimla, Apr 28,
Dharamshala, one of Himachal Pradesh’s most scenic destinations, is abuzz with excitement as it gets ready to host three Indian Premier League (IPL) matches at the iconic Dharamshala International Cricket Stadium. Sports lovers and tourists alike are flocking to the hill station, creating a surge in the local economy, particularly the hospitality industry.
The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) has announced that the IPL matches will be held on 4th, 8th, and 11th May. The opening match at the venue will see Punjab Kings taking on Lucknow Super Giants under the floodlights at 7:30 PM on 4th May. With ticket prices ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 7,500, cricket enthusiasts are booking early to witness the action live amidst the breathtaking backdrop of the Dhauladhar ranges.
To ensure safety and smooth conduct of the matches, security arrangements have been meticulously planned. The city has been divided into six sectors, with approximately 1,000 police personnel being deployed. Parking areas have been designated at Football Ground Charan, Dadi Mela Ground, and Sai Ground for VVIPs, while the Boys School has been earmarked for media personnel. Special traffic regulations will be enforced, including one-way routes and restricted vehicular movement near the stadium, as confirmed by SSP Shalini Agnihotri.
This sporting spectacle is expected to provide a significant boost to Dharamshala’s hospitality industry. Hotels, guest houses, homestays, and resorts have reported a sharp rise in bookings, with many already sold out for early May. Restaurant owners, tour operators, and local vendors are gearing up to meet the influx of visitors, offering special packages, local tours, and curated dining experiences to attract cricket fans and tourists.
Additionally, the IPL matches coincide with the best time to visit Himachal Pradesh, with pleasant weather and clear views of the mountains, adding to the appeal. Travel agencies are offering combined packages that include match tickets, accommodation, and sightseeing tours of nearby attractions like McLeodGanj, Triund, and Bhagsunag falls.
Local artisans and souvenir shops are also set to benefit from the increased footfall, as visitors seek to take home memories of their trip. With sports, tourism, and business blending seamlessly, Dharamshala is poised for an electrifying fortnight, putting it firmly on the map as a premier sports-tourism destination in India.
