In a move against corruption, vigilance teams in Himachal Pradesh have arrested two officials in separate incidents, due to the ongoing efforts to eliminate unethical practices in the region.
In Una, the vigilance team apprehended Raj Sharma, an RTI activist, who was found with Rs. 25 lakh, allegedly obtained through extortion. Sharma, a resident of Una, is accused of demanding a total of Rs. 75 lakh from local stone crusher owners, threatening them with legal action against their mining operations. The arrest took place in Chandigarh, following complaints from Rohan Vij and Gursajjan Bedi. A case has been registered against Sharma under Section 308(2) BNS 2023 at the Police Station, State Vigilance & Anti-Corruption Bureau (SV & ACB) Una. The investigation is ongoing.
In a separate incident in Chamba, Forest Chowkidar Jagad Singh from the Tissa Forest Range was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 12,000. Singh, in collusion with other forest officials, allegedly solicited the bribe to issue a grazing permit to the complainant. A case has been filed against Singh under Sections 7 and 7(A) of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, at the Police Station SV & ACB Chamba. Singh has been taken into custody, and further investigation is in progress.
