Shimla, Aug 22,
A day after the Himachal Pradesh Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Centre to confer Bharat Ratna on Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, Education Minister Rohit Thakur reiterated in the House that the honour would be a true tribute to the state’s architect and first Chief Minister.
Thakur said the demand reflects the collective sentiment of Himachal’s 75 lakh people. Recalling Dr. Parmar’s role in laying the foundation of modern Himachal, he said the visionary leader not only secured separate statehood by strongly pleading before the Fazal Ali Commission but also steered the state through its formative years with foresight.
Highlighting his 18-year-long tenure as Chief Minister, Thakur said Parmar prioritized roads as the “lifeline” of the hill state, ensured the setting up of Himachal University and the High Court, and promoted horticulture which transformed the rural economy. “It is because of his vision that Himachal is today called the ‘Fruit Bowl of India’,” he noted.
Calling Parmar a symbol of the state’s pride and identity, the minister added that conferring Bharat Ratna would not only honour his legacy but also inspire future generations.
