Finance & Accounts Officers’ association seeks fair probe into MC Shimla officer’s death
Shimla, May 12,
With the death of Municipal Corporation Shimla Deputy Controller (Finance) Rameshwar Sharma triggering widespread discussion in official and public circles over the past few days, the Himachal Pradesh State Finance and Accounts Service Officers’ Association on Tuesday demanded a prompt, transparent and impartial inquiry into the matter.
The Association raised the demand during a condolence meeting organised in Shimla, where officers described Sharma’s death as an irreparable loss to the department and paid tributes to his service record.
Rameshwar Sharma, around 45 years old, was posted as Deputy Controller-cum-Accounts Officer with the Shimla Municipal Corporation. According to police and media reports, he was found hanging at his residence in Mehli on May 9 after allegedly returning home from office on half-day leave. He was rushed to IGMC Shimla, where doctors declared him dead.
Police subsequently registered an FIR under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (abetment to suicide) and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators also recovered a suicide note from the spot. According to police officials quoted in media reports, the note reportedly referred to “poor service conditions” and mental stress linked to official duties, though no specific individual was named or directly blamed.
The incident has since generated concern among employees and officers within government departments, especially in the Municipal Corporation Shimla, where colleagues have reportedly been left shaken by the development. Family members too have sought a fair probe into the circumstances that may have led to the officer taking the extreme step.
During Tuesday’s condolence meeting, the Finance and Accounts Officers’ Association said Sharma was known as an honest, hardworking and dedicated officer who had made significant contributions during his service tenure. The Association stated that his simple and cooperative nature had earned him respect among officers and employees alike.
Representatives of the Association urged the government and administration to ensure a fair and expeditious investigation so that the facts emerge at the earliest and justice is delivered to the bereaved family.
All officers present at the meeting observed a two-minute silence for the peace of the departed soul and prayed for strength for the family to bear the loss.
The Association also resolved to remember Sharma’s services and contributions to the department, stated the press note issued by Association General Secretary Vinod Kumar Gautam.
