Shimla, Dec 13,
In a incident in Rohru, Himachal Pradesh, a goat was publicly sacrificed on a bridge in broad daylight, flouting directives from both the Supreme Court and the Himachal Pradesh High Court, which prohibit animal sacrifices in public spaces.
The act, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has drawn sharp criticism for its blatant disregard for the law.
Social activist Surendra Papta, known for his anti-corruption and social justice initiatives, filed a formal complaint with the police, denouncing the act as a serious violation of legal and ethical norms. Papta also criticized the local administration and law enforcement for failing to prevent such an occurrence in broad daylight.
Responding to the complaint, the Rohru police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unknown individuals under sections 325 and 223 of the Indian Penal Code, along with section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Initial investigations suggest the involvement of an individual with political ties, though no official confirmation has been made.
The viral video shows the ritual being performed in the presence of a deity, with vehicles stopped on the bridge as onlookers witnessed the sacrifice. Activists have pointed out that such acts not only contravene judicial orders but also disrupt societal harmony by perpetuating controversial practices under the guise of tradition.
Papta has called for strict action against those responsible and demanded accountability from the administration for its lapses. He emphasized the need for heightened surveillance and stricter enforcement of laws to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area for clues, while the public awaits justice for what has been deemed a flagrant violation of both law and public conscience.
This incident has reignited the debate on illegal animal sacrifices and has also placed the local administration under intense public and judicial scrutiny.
