Fire incidents mar Diwali celebrations across Himachal; property worth lakhs gutted in Manikaran, Rampur and Kangra

The festival of lights turned tragic in parts of Himachal Pradesh as multiple fire incidents were reported across the state on Diwali night, leaving behind property damage worth several lakhs of rupees.
While the day saw markets buzzing with shoppers buying sweets, lights and fireworks, the celebrations took a grim turn by nightfall when fire-related mishaps were reported from Kullu, Shimla, and Kangra districts.
A massive fire broke out at the Kasol Inn Hotel in Manikaran, Kullu district, late on Sunday night. The blaze engulfed the upper floors of the multi-storey building, reducing them to ashes before firefighters could bring it under control. According to initial reports, the fire is suspected to have started due to fireworks. Although no loss of life has been reported, property worth several lakhs was destroyed.
In Rampur Bushahr of Shimla district, flames broke out near the historic Skull Temple, gutting four adjoining shops. The incident created panic in the area as the fire spread quickly before being contained by the local fire brigade. Preliminary assessments indicate heavy damage to the shops and their goods.
Another fire incident occurred in Pathiyar, under the Nagarota Bagwan subdivision of Kangra district, where an electrical goods shop caught fire during the night. Firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings, but goods worth lakhs were destroyed.
Fire department officials said the incidents appear to be linked to the extensive use of fireworks and festive lighting during Diwali. They have urged people to observe greater caution with firecrackers and electrical setups during future celebrations.
Despite these incidents, Diwali was celebrated with traditional enthusiasm across Himachal Pradesh, with the night skies illuminated by fireworks between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., marking the peak of the festivities.
