Shimla, Jan 27,
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert warning of heavy snowfall at isolated places in Chamba, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti and Shimla districts during the next 15 hours, as a strong western disturbance continues to affect Himachal Pradesh
According to the IMD, light to moderate rain and snowfall have already been recorded at several locations across the state, while one or two spells of heavy snowfall are very likely in the higher reaches. Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts are expected to witness heavy snow accompanied by gusty winds ranging between 40–50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph. Similar conditions may prevail in upper areas of Chamba and Kullu, raising concerns of disruption to normal life
The weather office has cautioned that heavy snowfall could lead to slippery roads, reduced visibility, traffic congestion and possible disruption of power, water supply and communication services in vulnerable areas. Commuters, tourists and residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow advisories issued by local authorities.
IMD has also forecast a sharp drop of 3 to 6 degrees Celsius in both minimum and maximum temperatures over the next 24 hours to few days, which may intensify cold conditions across the state. District administrations and disaster management authorities have been asked to remain on alert, particularly in high-altitude and snow-prone regions
