Shimla, May 19,
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 24 to advocate for a ban on apple imports from Turkey and an increase in import duties on foreign apples. This move aims to safeguard the interests of domestic apple growers, who are facing stiff competition from cheaper imported apples.
“After working hard for a number of years, an apple grower brings up the orchard like a child,” CM Sukhu stated, emphasizing the dedication and investment of local horticulturists. He highlighted that the influx of foreign apples, especially from Turkey, at lower prices is causing significant losses to Indian farmers.
Noteworthy that currently, India imposes a 50% customs duty on apple imports, aligning with the World Trade Organization’s maximum permitted rate. However, this rate was reduced from a previous 75%, leading to concerns among local producers about the competitiveness of domestic apples.
As per Volza’s India Import data, India imports most of its apple supplies from United State, Chile and Turkey. Wherein Turkey has emerged as a significant exporter of apples to India. According to trade data, Turkey accounted for 24% of India’s fresh apple imports between October 2023 and September 2024, making it the largest supplier during that period.
CM Sukhu plans to formally request the Central government to not only ban apple imports from Turkey but also to reconsider the current import duty structure to better protect domestic horticulture. He emphasized that while trade agreements are under the purview of the central government, the state has a responsibility to advocate for its farmers’ welfare.
The Chief Minister also announced his intention to write a letter to Prime Minister Modi, detailing the challenges faced by apple growers and the need for policy interventions to support the domestic apple industry.
