Shimla, Sept 4,
In the wake of widespread damage caused by incessant rains, cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides across Himachal Pradesh, the State Government has announced significant relaxations in MGNREGA norms to speed up the repair and restoration of rural infrastructure.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Thursday that the decision was taken to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation, while also addressing the rising demand for employment in rural areas. “The State has suffered massive losses in agriculture, horticulture, livestock, and public assets. Our government is committed to extending all possible support to the affected people,” he stated.
Under the revised provisions, Deputy Commissioners have been empowered to sanction new works under MGNREGA without the need for prior approval from the gram sabha. Ex-post facto approval from the gram sabha, panchayat samiti, and zila parishad will be obtained later, given the practical difficulties of holding meetings in the current adverse weather conditions.
The State Government has also lifted the cap of 20 works per gram panchayat, enabling Deputy Commissioners to sanction all categories of projects, including land development. Furthermore, the financial ceiling for individual land development works has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh per beneficiary.
CM Sukhu emphasized that these relaxations would not only help restore damaged rural infrastructure but also provide critical employment opportunities during this difficult time. “Every possible effort is being made to support people in distress,” he added.
