Shimla, Jan 6,
In light of the recent concerns raised during a National-level meeting chaired by the Union Health Secretary regarding the spread of Human Metapneumovirus and related respiratory illnesses, the Health Secretary of Himachal Pradesh held a virtual meeting with principals of medical colleges, chief medical officers of all districts, and medical superintendents across the state.
During the meeting, the Health Secretary emphasized the need for enhanced surveillance and directed all healthcare facilities to closely monitor cases of influenza and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). Hospitals were instructed to maintain detailed records of patients exhibiting symptoms such as fever, cough, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. Special attention was advised for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with compromised immunity.
The Health Secretary underscored the importance of timely testing and reporting to prevent the escalation of respiratory illnesses. Medical institutions were urged to ensure the availability of diagnostic tools, antiviral medications, and isolation facilities, should the need arise.
In an advisory issued to the public, the State government highlighted preventive measures such as wearing masks in crowded places, maintaining hand hygiene, and seeking medical attention for persistent respiratory symptoms. The advisory reassured citizens that while most cases of respiratory illnesses, including those caused by Human Metapneumovirus, are mild, early detection and care can prevent complications like bronchitis or pneumonia.
The Himachal Pradesh government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and called for a coordinated effort between medical professionals and the community to mitigate the spread of influenza and SARI in the state.
