Himachal Police issue safety advisory for heavy and tourist vehicle drivers during Apple season -

The apple harvest season in Himachal Pradesh is a crucial period for both farmers and the local economy. Recognizing the challenges posed by the monsoon and rugged terrain, the Himachal Pradesh Police have issued a advisory to ensure the safe, smooth, and hassle-free movement of apple-loaded trucks. This initiative primarily targets the apple-growing districts of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, and Kinnaur.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Narveer Singh Rathore, all trucks and jeeps deployed for apple transportation are required to adhere to specific guidelines aimed at minimizing mishaps, preventing crop damage during transit, and ensuring smooth traffic flow. These measures are particularly crucial during the rainy season, when roads can become treacherous and prone to landslides.

One of the key components of the traffic plan is the implementation of a detailed route management system. This system ensures that apple-laden vehicles follow designated routes that are regularly monitored and maintained for safety. By doing so, the police can manage traffic congestion more effectively and respond quickly to any issues that arise, such as road blockages or accidents.

In addition to route management, there are several do’s and don’ts that transporters must follow.

For instance, vehicles should not be overloaded, and drivers must be cautious of speed limits to prevent accidents on slippery roads. Special precautions are advised during adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rain or snowfall, to ensure the safety of both the drivers and the precious cargo.
Also drivers should ensure loads are evenly distributed and securely tied down. Shifting loads can affect vehicle stability, particularly on sharp curves.

Additionally the police also briefed about braking techniques. Using engine braking on slopes to prevent brake overheating and failure is recommended. Sudden braking should be avoided in favor of gradual deceleration to maintain control. Here it is pertinent to mention that normally apple loading is done in remote areas, where roads are narrow. A vehicle breakdown on such ‘kachha’ or semi gravel roads can cost heavily. Noteworthy that apple is a perishable produce and any delay can cost the apple farmers heavily.

” Regular breaks to combat fatigue are advised, as drowsy driving poses significant risks. Drivers should ensure they are well-rested before starting their trips, stated the police advisory.
Talking about tourists, the advisory stated, ” Tourist vehicle drivers are reminded to ensure passengers wear seat belts and provide clear instructions to remain seated and avoid unnecessary movement.”

The traffic advisory also emphasizes coordination between various stakeholders, including local authorities, Gram Panchayat heads, and NGOs. These groups play a vital role in disseminating information about safe transportation practices and monitoring compliance in their respective areas. This collaborative approach helps in addressing any logistical challenges promptly and efficiently, stated the ASP.
