Shimla, June 2
Himachal Pradesh recorded a voter turnout of 70.07 percent in the Lok Sabha elections, with the State Election Department releasing the final figures today. The Assembly by-elections saw a slightly higher turnout of 74 percent.
According to a spokesperson from the State Election Department, the polling percentages for the parliamentary constituencies were as follows: Mandi at 72.15 percent, Hamirpur at 70.70 percent, Shimla at 70.04 percent, and Kangra at 67.24 percent.
The by-election turnout in the assembly constituencies was notably higher. Lahaul Spiti recorded a turnout of 75.09 percent, Dharamshala 71.30 percent, Sujanpur 74.53 percent, Badsar 72.31 percent, Gagret 75.49 percent, and Kutlehar topped the list with 77.43 percent.
Earlier, the Election Commission of India had reported a tentative polling figure of around 69 percent by 6 pm on election day. However, due to long queues and technical issues with approximately 50 EVMs, voting continued until the last voter in line had cast their ballot.
All EVMs and VVPATs have been secured in designated strong rooms, and the polling process was largely peaceful, with only a few minor incidents reported.
The Election Commission had aimed for an 80 percent turnout but fell short of this target, particularly in constituencies like Nahan and Siraj. The scorching heatwave impacted voter turnout, with most citizens opting to vote either in the early morning or late afternoon.
