Shimla, Dec 3,
The exclusion of Himachal Pradesh, a globally renowned tourist destination, from the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment Scheme has sparked widespread criticism. The Central Government recently announced a package of ₹3,296 crore for 23 states under the scheme. However, it is deeply unfortunate and unjustifiable to exclude Himachal Pradesh, a state celebrated for its thriving tourism industry and scenic beauty.
Former NSUI General Secretary Yasin Butt expressed strong disapproval of this decision, highlighting the state’s significant contributions to India’s tourism sector. He emphasized that while the Himachal Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Sukhu, has been making concerted efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure and promote sustainable tourism, the Central Government’s discriminatory stance undermines these initiatives.
Himachal Pradesh, particularly Kangra, recently designated as the tourism capital of the state, has been at the forefront of tourism development. The state has introduced several innovative measures to boost tourism, such as creating Buddhist tourism circuits, promoting eco-tourism, and developing rural tourism. The government’s success in retaining Wildflower Hall and introducing recreational activities like the cruise-shaped motorboat in Gobind Sagar Lake exemplifies its dedication to enriching the tourism experience.
The introduction of Shikara rides in Gobind Sagar Lake is yet another innovative step aimed at diversifying tourism offerings in the state. Such initiatives are not only designed to attract tourists but also to provide employment opportunities for the local population, contributing to the overall economic development of Himachal Pradesh.
The state’s exclusion from the capital investment scheme comes as a significant blow, particularly in the wake of recent natural disasters that have wreaked havoc on its infrastructure. Many argue that this decision reflects an unjustified bias against the state. Ravi Ranout, a student leader from Himachal Pradesh University, criticized the BJP-led Central Government for neglecting the state’s needs, accusing it of playing politics instead of addressing critical developmental issues.
Ranout further lambasted BJP’s state leaders for their silence on such pressing matters. He pointed out that while these leaders claim to represent the interests of Himachal Pradesh, their failure to advocate for the state’s inclusion in the scheme raises questions about their commitment to the state’s welfare. He also condemned the spread of false information by BJP leaders, which, he claimed, tarnishes the state’s image and undermines its developmental efforts.
The lack of assistance from the Central Government in rebuilding the state post-disaster and its exclusion from the scheme are seen as attacks on the state’s economy. Himachal Pradesh, with its world-famous tourist attractions, deserves recognition and support to fulfill its potential as a global tourism hub. Depriving the state of essential funds for tourism and urban development not only stifles growth but also alienates the people of Himachal Pradesh, who rely heavily on tourism for their livelihood.
As the state government continues its efforts to promote tourism and revive the economy, it is crucial for the Central Government to reconsider its stance. Equal support for all states, irrespective of political affiliations, is vital for fostering a balanced and inclusive model of development. Ignoring Himachal Pradesh in such initiatives not only disrupts its progress but also contradicts the vision of a united and developed India.
